Yesterday my aunt told me she thought she had a nest in her flower pot. Every time she would water the plants a bird would come out. So I went and looked today and as soon as moved the plants sure enough momma jumped to the ground and opened her wings. A sure sign that there was a nest in there. When I got on the step ladder I saw three newly hatched chicks, eyes still closed. Can anyone guess what species they where? Well here is a hint they usually always nest on the ground. Well it was a pair of Dark-eyed Juncos, the third pair of the year! I'm so use to seeing their nests on the ground but apparently nests in window ledges, and in hanging flower pots or light fixtures are just as common as ground nests. These chicks will likely be gone in under two weeks.
Thanks for reading,
I saw your feeding station post at Whatbird, so came by. I'm a mite bit jealous. I would sure enjoy having my favorite bird nest here. We had them a good amount of time this past winter. The first ones arrived early November and we had a few stragglers until the end of April. Sadly, they were our Cooper's favorite meal, so caught a few over the winter.
