Harris's Sparrow in Marathon!!

Hey Everyone!!

Some pretty exciting news, today I had a Harris's sparrow visit my feeders!! My dad first noticed a bird with a longer tail. Without knowing this I came home and saw a larger sparrow looking bird feeding on the ground. A few things I noticed where that its body was larger than the Dark-eyed Juncos and other sparrows at my feeders and that its tail was also longer. It also had patches of black on its chest.

It's not a rare bird in our area but it's a nice one for sure. Its normal migration range is just touching Thunder Bay. Oddly enough when I called Michael of North Shore Nature he too had a Harris's Sparrow in his yard today. After comparing pictures we determined that they are not the same individual.

As for other guests at our feeders we are getting:
American Goldfinches
Savannah Sparrows
White-throated Sparrows
White-crowned Sparrows
Black-capped Chickadees
Common Grackle
And a single Blue jay now and then

We are planning on renovating our feeders this fall before all the counts and Project Feeder Watch. Hopefully we will attract more birds for Feeder Watch.

Many of you may be wondering why there have been so few posts this summer/ fall, well to be honest I have not been doing much birding. At the begging of the season I encountered a few bears in the bush so I decided to hang up the hiking boots for a while, but not to worry they will be coming out very soon.

Thanks for reading,
